  THE SALAMANDER OCTOBER 2022
Past Master Blois attends the Proclamation following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II
We will all remember where we were when we heard the sad news from Balmoral on September 8th 2022. It is 70 years since the death of King George VI in February 1952 and many of us will have only ever known the Queen. The days running up to the State Funeral included a number of events which were televised for the first time, including the Accession Council at St James’s Palace on Saturday 10th September, an ancient ceremony which follows swiftly after the death of the Sovereign and is followed by Proclamation Ceremonies throughout the country. The City of London Proclamation was at the Royal Exchange almost immediately after that of the Accession Council. The Westminster Proclamation was on the following day at the Old Marylebone Town Hall with the Lord Mayor, Councillors and Honorary Aldermen of which Francis Blois, Past Master of our Company (2019 – 2021) is one, and is pictured with the Mace Bearer and the Lord Mayor of Westminster.
I am also a Westminster Abbey Honorary Steward and had the honour and privilege to be on duty in the Abbey on Monday 19th September for the funeral. I had a very early
start amid strict security, with 2,000 people in the Abbey. It was the first State Funeral in Westminster Abbey since George II in 1760.
Long Live King Charles III.
