Remembering and Honouring

On Sunday September 10th members of the Company participated in the annual Act of Remembrance and Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Firefighters Memorial in London. The memorial, situated to the south of St Paul’s Cathedral, is featured on the front cover of our current issue of Salamander and the plinth contains the names of over 2,300 fire and rescue personnel who have died serving their communities.

Sadly, an additional name was added to commemorate a firefighter who died on duty this year. Firefighter Tom Naples, of Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, collapsed and died in February 2017 whilst on a training exercise. In addition, another 44 names have been added to the memorial this year, following research that has identified firefighters who died whilst on duty but had not been listed in the records of the Trust.

Our illustrations show participants gathering around the memorial, including our own Wardens in the background; our Master John Mansfield laying a wreath on behalf of the Company; and Past Master Colin Livett, Chairman of the Memorial Trust, together with Liveryman Peter Holland, Chief Fire and Rescue Adviser.
